Service Businesses That Scale
Review scalable service strategies such as standardized offerings, documented systems, and technology leverage for growth.
What was corrected
The article attributed a specific '350 firms' productization study with detailed percentages to David Maister's real book Strategy and the Fat Smoker, which is actually about organizational execution rather than an empirical productization study. It attributed a specific 2022 Pepperdine University partnership study to John Warrillow that could not be verified anywhere. It cited a 'Win Without Pitching Census' report from Blair Enns and a 2018 longitudinal study from Michael Gerber, neither of which could be found in either author's real published work. In its case studies, it described Design Pickle as being acquired by a private equity firm in 2021, when the public record shows the opposite, Design Pickle was an acquirer during that period and later raised growth equity rather than being sold. It gave WP Curve a revenue figure well above its documented growth trajectory, cited specific proposal and client figures for the agency Barrel that could not be verified, and gave Bench Accounting's founding year and 2022 figures incorrectly while omitting the company's real December 2024 collapse.
The section now describes Maister's, Warrillow's, Enns's, and Gerber's real, general, well-documented views on service business scaling without the unverifiable specific studies attached to them. Design Pickle is now described accurately without the incorrect 2021 acquisition claim, WP Curve's growth is described using figures consistent with its documented trajectory, Barrel's unverifiable specific figures and client list have been replaced with an accurate general description, and Bench Accounting's description now includes its real December 2024 collapse alongside its earlier growth.
Why this is better
Web searches for each cited study and case-study figure found either a real author or company with no matching evidence for the specific claim, or in one case, evidence that directly contradicts what was described. Since the underlying authors, companies, and general lessons about productized service businesses are real and well established, the sections were rewritten to correct or remove the specific inaccuracies rather than deleting the material outright.
