Glossary of terms

Definitions of the terms used in CitePep’s records, profiles, standards and policies. Where a policy and this glossary differ, the policy applies.

Acceptedrecord
A contribution the publisher has approved. Only accepted work appears on a page record or a profile.

Attribution blockrecord
The element on a publisher’s page that names who wrote, reviewed and corrected it, each name linked to a public profile.
Authorrole
On a page: the person credited with writing it. In pre-submission review: the researcher who commissions a review of their own manuscript.

Claimreview
A factual statement on a page, a figure, date, quote, definition or cause-and-effect statement, that can be tested against a source. Opinion is not a claim.

Claiming a pagerecord
A request to be credited as author of a page you wrote. Recorded only after the publisher confirms it.

Communitycommunity
A topic-based space where verified members ask, check and fix published information together. Each community has its own moderators and may add rules to the site-wide guidelines.
Conflict of interestpolicy
Any relationship that could reasonably affect judgement of a page or manuscript. Some conflicts are excluded automatically; all others must be declared before work begins.

Contribution scorereputation
A cumulative measure of accepted work, weighted by role. It increases only when a publisher accepts a contribution.

Correctionrecord
A proposed change to a published page, stating the exact current text, the exact replacement, the reason and a source.

Correction logrecord
The public, append-only list of accepted corrections on a page, each with the previous text, the new text and the date.

Declinedrecord
Work the publisher chose not to accept. Retained privately for integrity purposes; never published and never credited.

Fee freezepayment
The point at which a reviewer’s fee becomes fixed: the moment they accept a review. It cannot change afterwards.
Findingreview
A single point in a pre-submission review: the quoted passage, the issue a referee would raise, and what would address it. Graded major, minor or note.

Gradereview
The severity assigned to a finding. Major: likely to affect the editorial outcome. Minor: should be fixed. Note: a suggestion, not a flaw.

Helpful votecommunity
A member’s signal that a post or answer was useful. Votes decide what is shown first; they never change anyone’s reputation.
Levelreputation
One of four public tiers, Contributor, Trusted, Verified, Expert, determined by accepted contributions and acceptance rate.

Matchingreview
The selection of reviewers for a manuscript by field, review language, absence of conflict of interest, and available capacity.
Office hourscommunity
A scheduled Q&A in which a reviewer answers authors’ general questions about methods and peer review. No manuscript may be discussed.
On-time ratereputation
The proportion of a reviewer’s completed reviews delivered by the agreed deadline. One of two public facts about a reviewer’s reviews.

Open problemcommunity
A thread flagging a claim on a published page that may be wrong. Members investigate, and an agreed fix can become a correction.
Open requestrecord
A page a publisher has posted for a qualified specialist to review, correct or source.

The public history of a single page: every credited contributor, their role, and each accepted change with its date and source.

Pre-submission reviewreview
A confidential expert review of a manuscript, commissioned by its author before submission to a journal. Not a journal peer review.

Publisherrole
The owner of a verified site, and the only party who can accept or decline contributions to its pages.

Resolvedcommunity
A thread whose question experts in the topic agree has been answered. A short community answer is shown at the top.
Reviewerrole
A verified researcher who writes pre-submission reviews, sets their own fee and is paid per completed review regardless of its conclusions.

Sourcereview
The citable evidence supporting a claim or correction, preferably the original study, dataset or official publication.

Topic authorityreputation
A per-topic measure of a contributor’s accepted work, used to match them to pages and requests in that topic.

Trust scorereputation
The share of a contributor’s decided work that publishers accepted. Displayed only once enough decisions exist to be meaningful.

Verified siterecord
A domain whose owner has demonstrated control by a meta tag or file. Required before any contribution to its pages can be accepted.
